Transforming Health: Central Adelaide Local Health Network - Minister Announces Date for the Opening of New Royal Adelaide Hospital

08 May 2017

The PSA attended a confidential briefing with the Acting Chief Executive Officer of CALHN today prior to the Minister announcing that the new Royal Adelaide Hospital will open on 5 September 2017.

The clinical inpatient moves will occur over three days, from 4, 5 and 6 September 2017, with a fourth day set aside as a contingency.

At 7 am on Tuesday 5 September 2017 the Emergency Department (ED) at the new hospital will start taking new patients. At the same time the old ED will officially close.

The PSA was advised that the move will begin with Outpatient Services, Radiation Oncology and Day Surgery Services transitioning to the new RAH, becoming operational from 14 August 2017. This phased approach will enable staff to become familiar with their new workplaces before the inpatient move.

The PSA has raised concerns over the administrative and allied health resources as the bed plan for the new RAH has been based on a number of factors, including average activity across the year, and intended services moves. The plan is to flex up and down beds depending upon demand. The problem with this is that the increase in allied health and administrative resources required may not be funded as normally there is no resourcing allocations for flexed beds. The PSA will continue to raise this as a matter of priority that allied health and administrative resource funding has included the ability to flex up additional beds within the costs so that there are no unreasonable workloads for PSA members in this plan for the new RAH.

The transition plan for corporate and administrative staff going to the Roma Mitchell Building has still not been shared with the PSA. Now that there is a date for the opening of the new RAH this must be released.

PSA members who have comments or concerns about the move to the new RAH or the corporate staff move to the Roma Mitchell Building, please contact the PSA by emailing enquiries@cpsu.asn.au
