Use Of Volunteers in SAPOL

24 August 2017

At a meeting between PSA members, Industrial staff and SAPOL management representatives held on Wednesday 23 August 2017 to discuss issues about changes affecting Customer Service Officers (CSOs), the question of the use of volunteers was raised.

Members advised that volunteers were undertaking tasks that should be done by CSOs.

It is apparent that there is no monitoring of what volunteers do and there is no report made centrally.

The PSA is writing to both the Police Commissioner and the Police Minster about our concerns.

The PSA is seeking information from members who will assist in further discussions with SAPOL. This would include, but not be limited to, instances where volunteers have encroached on CSOs area of responsibility, what tasks they did and who told them to do these tasks. Members can also advise how many hours per day volunteers work, how many days per week, their spread of hours and any other information that you think may be useful.
