Today is R U OK Day

13 September 2018

R U OK? Day is a national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask, “Are you ok?” and support those struggling with life. Taking part can be as simple as learning R U OK?’s four steps so you can have a conversation that could change a life – Ask, Listen, Encourage Action and Check In.

The day is about inspiring people to start these conversations every day of the year. Help get your workplace asking "Are you OK?" with the resources available on the R U OK? Website.

Another resource specifically for workplaces is Heads Up - an initiative developed by the Mentally Healthy Workplace Alliance and Beyond Blue.

The Heads Up website provides a wide range of resources, information and advice for individuals and organisations, including nine key attributes of a mentally healthy workplace:

  • Prioritising mental health
  • Trusting, fair and respectful culture
  • Open and honest leadership
  • Good job design
  • Workload management
  • Employee Development
  • Inclusion and influence
  • Work/life balance
  • Mental health support

More information can be found here.

The Public Service Association (PSA) successfully negotiated clauses which mandate Mental First Aid Training across the public sector in the new South Australian Modern Public Sector Enterprise Agreement: Salaried 2017. Other clauses the PSA has negotiated and improved which support the above attributes, include Workplace Flexibility, Domestic and Family Violence Leave and Workload Management
