Public Health and Clinical Systems Independent Review Announced - DHA

29 August 2016

The PSA has been advised that SA Health is under significant financial pressure with a savings target of $138 million for 2016/17. The majority of the functions undertaken within Public Health and Clinical Systems are being reviewed by Independent Reviewers Professors Mick Reid (past Director General of Queensland Health) and Jeanette Young, Queensland Health’s Chief Health Officer for the past 11 years. The Terms of Reference for this Independent Review can be read here. The areas included in this review are:

  • Public Health Services
    • Office of Public Health
    • Health Protection Branch
    • Food and Controlled Drugs Branch
    • Public Health Partnerships Branch
    • Scientific Services Branch
  • Communicable Disease Control Branch
  • Blood, Organ and Tissue Programs
  • Emergency Management Unit
  • Epidemiology Branch
  • SA Medical Education & Training
  • Office of the Chief Public Health Officer

Excluded from this review are Quality and Safety, and Library Services. As the scope of the review includes looking at opportunities for consolidation, the PSA is concerned that yet again Public Health is being targeted for the majority of the savings target. These units combined have a total of 190 FTE and a budget of $82 million. There is an opportunity for the PSA to meet with the Reviewers and we welcome member feedback and concerns to present to them. The PSA will keep a close watch on this matter. The PSA will continue to advocate strongly for members and the services they provide and welcomes feedback at any time on any issue.
