PSA SSO1 to SSO2 Reclassification Initiative

02 December 2016

Classification Standards that apply to an SSO reclassification application

Since 1 July 2016, School Service Officer (SSO), Aboriginal Employment Worker (AEW) and Early Childhood Worker's (ECW) employment is governed by Part 7 of the Public Sector Act 2009 including determinations issued by the Commissioner of Public Sector Employment (CPSE). Previously employment decisions were determined by DECD. This means there is now an external option to scrutinise decisions made by DECD.

Classification Standards that apply to the classification and reclassification of SSO duties are now specifically governed by Determination 5. These Standards can be found at (http://publicsector.sa.gov.au/wp-content/uploads/Commissioners-Determination-5-Classification-and-Remuneration-1-June-2016.pdf), and read in conjunction with Attachment 3.

If there is any variance or discrepancy between a DECD statement or policy on reclassification, the CPSE Determination and attachments take precedence and are determinative. The SSO work level definitions in the School Service Officers (Government Schools) Award still apply.

In the event that a reclassification application is not approved, members now have a right to internal review under section 61 of the PS Act and, if required, external review by the Public Sector Grievance Review Commission under section 62 of the PS Act. Further information on these processes can be found at https://www.legislation.sa.gov.au/LZ/C/A/Public%20Sector%20Act%202009.aspx

To support our members the PSA is conducting DECD SSO Reclassification workshops based on the new approach to applying for reclassification.

Two workshops per day will be held in Week 10 of this school term. These sessions will be acknowledged as authorised training and development and participants will receive a certificate of attendance at the end of the session.
