Prisoner Classifications - Correctional Officer and Community Safety

28 September 2018

Following the recent prisoner escape from the Adelaide Pre-release Centre the PSA has written to the DCS Chief Executive asking what steps DCS is taking to reduce the risk to Correctional Officers and the community.

The PSA advised DCS that, while it supports prisoner employment and programs aimed at prisoner rehabilitation, Correctional Officers are concerned about their safety and the safety of the community.

These concerns arise from inappropriate assessments by DCS Executive about prisoners’ suitability for placement in the APC and community settings. In some examples prisoner security classifications are reduced to low security either too early or for prisoners who are not suitable due to their offending history.

This places Correctional Officers and the community at risk.
