Mobilong Prison – Dispute – Eyre Unit Infrastructure – Eave Extensions

31 March 2017

PSA members at Mobilong Prison are angry and disappointed following recent advice from DCS that the infrastructure changes to the new Eyre Unit to extend the roof eaves would not take place.

As a result the PSA has requested an urgent relisting of the Mobilong Eyre Unit matter in the Industrial Relations Commission SA (IRCSA). The matter has been listed for Voluntary Conference on Monday 3 April 2017 at 1415 hours.

PSA members at Mobilong commenced operations in the Eyre Unit in good faith on the basis that various items that were agreed and subsequently listed in a DCS letter to the PSA would be completed by the target dates. These items included the Eyre Unit eave extensions.

The eave extensions are required to provide shelter from the rain when officers are accessing the Unit viewing windows at night to count prisoners. During the day the eave extensions would also provide shelter from the sun and rain for both officers and prisoners when prisoner counts are being conducted.

Mobilong Prison Eyre Unit matters have been the subject of previous IRCSA Conferences including a Compulsory Conference which was convened on Saturday 7 January 2017.

Members at Mobilong are prepared to take further industrial action. They have also expressed their gratitude for the support previously provided by their colleagues at the other prisons and would welcome their support again should this be required.

PSA members have stated that they require the Eyre Unit roof eaves to be extended consistent with the outcome of the Compulsory Conference at the IRCSA.
