DCS Should Take Responsibility for Lack of Policy

01 August 2016

The PSA has advised the Correctional Services Minister it is completely unacceptable to blame Correctional Officers at Yatala Labour Prison for a prisoner being at large, as reported recently in the media.

The Minister had made a statement to Parliament in part blaming Correctional Officers for being responsible for the prisoner being at large. The statement was subsequently reported through numerous media outlets.

This blaming of Correctional Officers is unjustified and unacceptable. The PSA has written to Minister Malinauskas expressing our serious concern about the statement, and highlighting the lack of written policies and procedures at the time of this incident occurring. View the PSA letter here.

The PSA will continue to stand up for members when they are subjected to unjustified criticism.
